What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are replacements for a cracked, chipped, broken, or decaying tooth. Dental implants are surgically implanted into the patient’s jaw. The titanium roots of the implant will be firmly secured into the jaw. The surgical process of implanting the root of the implant into the jaw mimics how our teeth already work, so the process is nothing that the jaw and mouth are not already familiar with. Dental implants are a great resource to replace a failing teeth. Compared to other solutions, like dental crowns and bridges, dental implants can last for a very long period of time.
Who Should Get Dental Implants?
There are some general things to consider before getting dental implants; they can only be used on patients who meet the following criteria:
- Have one or more missing or failing teeth
- Healthy oral tissues
- A fully developed and healthy jaw bone
- Unable or unwilling to wear dentures
- Do not smoke tobacco
- There are no health issues that would prevent the use of dental implants
Dental implants are not for everyone. If you think you may be a candidate, please contact Whole Family Dentistry for a consult.
Types of Dental Implants
Endosteal
dental implants are implants that are secured into the jaw bone. Endosteal dental implants are currently the only type of implant used. They have been used since 1965 and have advanced tremendously to create a very predictable method.
Single-Tooth
Dental implant is used when only one tooth has been lost or has failed. Whole Family Dentistry can provide a dental implant that will blend in with the rest of your teeth - it will function, feel, and look just like the rest of your teeth.
Multiple Teeth
dental implants are used when a patient is missing several teeth in a row. Multiple teeth dental implants are used when the surrounding gums and teeth are also healthy and intact. We can also plan on replacing an entire arch, or all of your teeth in a day. However, this procedure is not for everyone. Our experienced dental team can help you decide this procedure is right for your situation.
Full Mouth
implants are used when a patient needs a new row of teeth - which can be either the upper and/or the lower row. The dentist will implant four or more teeth, then we will create a beautiful and natural looking bridge that will anchor to those implants and stay there.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
Greater Stability
in your jaw and mouth will allow you to speak, chew, and use your jaw with much more ease. Dental implants will provide you with greater stability and confidence in your bite.
Long-lasting results
are possible with dental implants. You do not need to routinely have your implants switched out. However, like the teeth that you are born with, dental implants need to be maintained and cleaned. With the proper care and hygiene, dental implants can be enjoyed for a very long period of time.
Preserve your natural teeth
with our dental implants. One bad tooth can jeopardize the rest of your teeth. By having dental implants replace failing teeth, you can improve the overall health of your mouth.
Maintain Your Bone Health
with dental implants. When a tooth is lost from the jaw bone, nutrients will be redirected away from that area. With dental implants and the titanium root that attaches to the jaw, nutrients will again be distributed to that area, which will allow for the jaw to rebuild itself.
